Clayborne began when Elena Vasquez left the Archie Bray Foundation to open a studio of her own. Every piece is still thrown, glazed and fired by hand on SE Division Street — one wheel, one kiln, one maker with an eye for the quiet and the useful.

How a piece is made

  • Wedging

    Local clay is kneaded by hand to remove air and align the grain.

  • Throwing

    Centred and pulled on the wheel into its final form.

  • Drying

    Rested to leather-hard, trimmed, then bone-dry over days.

  • Firing

    Glazed and kiln-fired twice, up to 1,240°C.
